The Evoque is one of the most intriguing looking crossovers on the market and it is also one of the best selling thanks to its bold design. You would think that Land Rover wouldn’t be able to do anything to make the car stand out more but they have proven this wrong when they released the 2016 Range Rover Evoque Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The car is just what its name suggests, a convertible version of the regular two-door Evoque. However, it is more to it than just a missing roof.
The car now rides on a strengthened platform of the original in order to cope with the structural loss and on top of that it weighs around 200 to 300 pounds more than before. This will impact its performance levels but it will not matter that much considering it is not a car intended for high speed cornering but rather for relaxed driving.
Range Rover Evoque Convertible Price and Release Date
It will be released on the market starting with the second quarter of 2016 and in the United States the car will start at roughly $51,000 which is more than $10,000 more than the original.
2016 Range Rover Evoque Convertible Design
The design of the 2016 Range Rover Evoque Convertible is pretty similar to that of the coupe version so its front end is identical. However, it seems to be slightly better equipped because it will come with LED headlights as standard, larger wheels than usual as well as piano-black accents on the front and rear bumpers as well as on the hood and trunk. The biggest and most notable change though is the soft-top which makes it look similar to the coupe when it is up but it creates a more stunning appearance when the roof is down. The Evoque Convertible also features a small rear spoiler to complete its design which will be part of the roof’s structure when the roof will be up.
The interior on the other hand is pretty much identical to that of the regular Evoque and there are no real differences between the two. The Convertible features the same 10,2 inch infotainment and navigation system, a surround audio system as well as the same comfortable seats as before. The biggest change has to be the trunk which is nearly 9 cubic ft. which makes it smaller than that of a Golf. In the rear part of the body, Range Rover also installed a set of rollover protection bars which will pop-out in an emergency in just 90 milliseconds.
Range Rover Evoque 2016 Specs
Engine wise they went for something already tested on the base model so the 2016 Range Rover Evoque Convertible will come on the US market with a single engine choice, a 240 horsepower and over 250 lb-ft of torque 2 liter inline 4 turbocharged petrol engine from their new Ingenium family. This will be mated to a 9 speed automatic and it will be offered with all wheel drive as well as Land Rover’s terrain response system as standard. Just as we mentioned, the car will be slightly slower and less fuel efficient than the coupe mostly due to the added weight.
In Europe as well as a few other markets the car is also going to receive a few more engines in order to fit in a lower price point as well as be more appealing to those looking for fuel efficiency. A less powerful 2 liter petrol engine with around 200 horsepower will be made available at a later date while a 2 liter diesel offering between 160 and as much as 220 horsepower will be made available right at its official launch. The diesel is actually expected to become the best selling model in Europe.
