The MX5 has always been a favorite for those people wanting a small, cheap and fast sports car and the latest model is no different. It has been released in the early 2015 and since then it quickly became one of the best selling cars in its class. The model is completely different from the car it is replacing and thanks to the improvements Mazda and Fiat did to the car’s design, it is now up to 200 pounds lighter which is a great achievement. In order to further boost the car’s appeal, not too long ago a new model has been released at the New York Auto Show with the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF, where the RF stands for Retractable Fastback, a really interesting concept coming from a Japanese company.
This model is set to be marketed at around $2,000 more than the base model which would still be quite good all things considered. The RF gets a new look and that’s about it so the running gear engines and even the interior remain completely unchanged. However, this is more than enough to make people love the car and due to that, the RF completely stole the show at New York where it has been one of the most praised cars ever released there.
2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Release Date
The release date for the production model has been set for the second part of the year, so there is still some wait time before the car will be available to the public.
Mazda MX5 RF Changes
Let’s start our preview with the biggest change on the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF, its roof. While the base model uses a retractable soft-top, the RF is quite a bit more different than that offering a hard top. However, unlike the older model where the roof was retracting completely to the trunk, the RF uses a similar Targa style to the Porsche 911 Targa. This means that when the roof is down, the car still has two flying buttresses in the back which do give it a coupe-feel but with the open top experience while when the roof is up, the RF looks a lot like a true coupe and not just like a convertible with a hard top installed. Thanks to the fact Mazda used lightweight materials, the car is similarly light and the extra added weight to the car’s center of gravity can easily be overlooked.

Just as we mentioned above, the interior of the RF is identical to the base model so the dashboard still is quite minimalistic but luckily it does come with all the usual bells and whistles of a car in its class. The seats can be had in cloth or leather and the driving position is low and really communicative with the driver.
2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Specs
Under the hood, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF will get the same two engines that can be found in the usual model from which only one will be available on the US market. The base car will receive a 1.5 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 offering 129 horsepower and 111 lb-ft of torque, enough to get it to 60 MPH in around 8 seconds. The 2 liter naturally aspirated model on the other hand will be the one available in the US and Europe and it will make 158 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough to get the car to 60 MPH in just 7 seconds. Rear wheel drive is going to be offered as standard on both and both of them will be available with either a 6 speed manual or with a 6 speed automatic in which case the car will be slightly slower due to the added weight.
