The Impreza has always been one of the more interesting compact cars on the market mainly because it was the only one that came with a standard all wheel drive system and a really nice chassis. However, the car was not perfect as its engines were usually quite expensive to maintain and the interior lacked quality. In order to change that and provide a much nicer experience, an all new model has been released a few weeks back at the New York Auto Show with the 2017 Subaru Impreza, a car which also happens to be their first model to use Subaru’s all new Global Platform which is set to underpin their entire lineup of cars in the next few years.
2017 Subaru Impreza Price and Release Date
This new platform is nearly 70% stiffer than the one before it and the best part is that it is modular. On top of that, Subaru says that thanks to the new platform and the new running gear, even the base model of the car should be up to 50% better to control its body roll. This would make it introduce an all new word for compact cars, agility. The price is still unreleased but the car is very likely still going to cost around $19,000 for a base model and up to $30,000 or more for an WRX version. The release date has been set for the end of the year.
Subaru Impreza 2017 Specs
Under the hood Subaru didn’t do much to their Impreza so the car still comes with a 2 liter naturally aspirated boxer engine. This unit now makes 152 horsepower and nearly 150 lb-ft of torque which is right up there with most of its competitors. The engine still sends all of its power via a CVT gearbox to an all wheel drive system so it should be perfect for those looking to get that all needed all weather capability. The official fuel consumption and performance numbers for the 2017 Subaru Impreza are still under wraps but it seems that the car will likely hit 26 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway thanks to the new direct injected engine while the 0 to 60 MPH time will likely drop to around 8.3 seconds which is average for its class.
The WRX as well as the STI are still under development but it seems that both of them will benefit greatly from the improved chassis of the car. Also, this time around, both of them should make use of Subaru’s new flat-four engine which will offer more torque and power from as low as 2,000 rpm.
Design wise, the Impreza is still an Impreza, so the actual shape did not change all that much from the previous model. However, there are quite a few new details around the car such as the new front end with the more aggressive styling that includes a more vertical grille with honeycomb mesh, new internals for its headlights as well as a new bumper. The back is similar as well with a new bumper and a new set of tail lights but in the end, it still looks familiar.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Subaru Impreza is offering a vastly improved interior over the previous generation and this will most likely be its strongest selling point in the next few years. The dashboard has been completely redesigned with new materials, a nicer design, easier to use controls as well as a much better driving position. The gray has been replaced by silver, black, contrasting stitching and also nicer upholstery. As standard the car comes with a rear view camera and Android Auto compatibility while options will add a large 8 inch touch-screen, a Harman/Kardon audio system and many more features such as automatic high beams, cross-traffic alert or blind spot monitoring.
