In order to mark the Corolla’s 50th anniversary, Toyota released an updated model as well as a special edition version. These two are going to be available starting with the fall of this year and while both of them are new, Toyota mainly worked on the technology offered with the cars as well as on the exterior in order to make it more appealing. The chassis, powertrain and even running gear are all identical to the car on the market today and that’s fine with us considering that the Corolla was always meant to be a cheap car to drive rather than the best car out there.
2017 Toyota Corolla Price
The new model comes with a restyled body and slight changes to the exterior while the special edition car adds a few unique features such as new wheels, new colors as well as an upgraded exterior. The 2017 Toyota Corolla special edition will only be made in 8,000 units and each one of these will feature a unique identification number. The price is still unknown but rumors suggest that the car will be around $23,000 while a base model of the car will start closer to $18,000 which makes it one of the most affordable cars on the market.
2017 Toyota Corolla Specs
Just as we mentioned above, under the hood of the new 2017 Toyota Corolla there is the same engine as before, a 1.8 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol engine which is available in two outputs. Most of the models come with the 132 horsepower unit which is usually mated to a 4 speed automatic or to a much better CVT gearbox. A sportier model is also available with the same engine and a 6 speed manual but this doesn’t bring too much sportiness to the table unfortunately. The better one to have is the one which equips the Eco model of the car. This particular unit developed 140 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque and it is a lot better and actually more fuel efficient. A CVT is the only choice here and that’s fine considering that it will easily get 40 MPG on the highway if driven carefully.
The running gear as well as the brakes have been left untouched and this is a missed opportunity for them because the Corolla drives quite poorly even for a cheap car. We do hope that in the near future, at least the Sport model will receive a stiffer ride with better body-roll control and slightly bigger brakes which are the biggest letdown on the current car.
On the outside, the base version of the Corolla is nearly identical to the older car. However, the front end has been slightly revised so it features a new bumper, all new LED headlights which are offered as standard as well as a new grille. The higher end models get upgraded LED headlights, LED fog-lamps, a sportier bumper while the Sport version of the car also gets black accents and a black grille. The special edition car is nearly identical to the base model but it does have a two-tone finish on the outside, the upgraded LED headlights as well as unique 17 inch wheels.
Toyota Corolla 2017 Interior
Inside the cabin, the special model of the 2017 Toyota Corolla gets a standard seven inch Entune-based touch-screen with phone screen mirroring technology, a 4.2 inch color screen in the instrument cluster, black upholstery with red contrasting stitching and red inserts around the cabin as well as special badges. The regular models get a similar treatment but the large Entune system or the screen inside the instrument cluster can only be had on the more expensive models and usually as optional extras, so the special edition models really does have great value for money.
